It's no big secret that the Vine has a bunch of real hotties among its ranks, but so far we've never really covered the subject – let alone create a contest for it. Is it time to fess up that, yes, your latest seed got me so hot?
Seriously, though, there've been various comments floating around about how intelligent and attractive a great percentage of the Women of Newsvine are. I keep waiting for someone to do a list or an article on the topic (or maybe a contest or something), but I think no male Newsviner is brave enough (or masochistic enough) to suggest such a thing.
Well, this male Newsviner sure is brave enough. Sort of. Well, maybe.
I thought about this for a bit, and figured that it may not be the greatest idea to just start a contest like that. For one, I wondered if the Newsvine Code of Honor had anything to say about this sort of thing. It didn't, really, with this section being the only remotely relevant part:
Newsvine is for collaborative discovery and discussion of the news, not self-promotion. Posting full articles which also appear on your blog is acceptable but seeding your own stuff is not.
It leads us to the important question: how news-unrelated is a contest like that, and would it stand out too much between the other not really news-related posts on the Vine? Additionally, it makes one wonder if people might take offense to such a contest being on a site like Newsvine (or such contests in general).
Personally, I'm always up for a break from our dominantly serious lives; news is important, but some light-hearted fun at times is highly necessary, I would argue.
But is a contest on the Vine about "hotness" of men and women pushing it? Here's my take.
I think a "who are the hottest men and women" contest would be sufficiently light-hearted and amusing to (just barely) fit the overall nature of Newsvine. This is a generally wise and mature, and obviously intelligent, community. I'd reckon that those who might feel offended by such a contest would know they can just ignore it (or me, for running it...) and that the rest would see it as intended, as nothing more than just some light-hearted fun.
Also, this is about hotness. I don't know about you, but a girl who's smart, debates with rock-solid arguments and is wise or mature enough to not fall pray to trollbaits is a lot hotter to me than just a pretty girl that couldn't navigate her way out of a chair. My poorly-constructed point being that smarts = hot, and the Vine does have that oh-so-sexy tagline, Get Smarter Here. Rowr.
I would argue that a "Hottest .. of Newsvine" contest would be perhaps the world's most likely contest to actually and honestly take intelligence and smarts into account and not just looks.
But perhaps that's just me and everybody else here feels different. So what do you think? Should we have a hottest men & women contest?
Update #1: So after about half a day, it seems that a lot of people would be cool with this and even like the idea, but there's a question about how nomination would work. In my eyes, it shouldn't be a contest for the #1 hottest man and woman, but for a top 10 or top 5 or so; nominations would thus be open to anyone submitting themselves for it to provide for a large pool to pick from. I have some ideas on how I want to do this that I think you'll all appreciate. I'm going to run this by Mike D. of Newsvine CEO fame to make sure he's cool with it. More updates to follow.
Update #2: I just want to add that I'm terribly amused by the fact that nearly every comment to this post has become a Star-rated one. :-)
